What are transdermal patches?

They are an adhesive product similar to a Band-Aid that is intended to stick on your skin for 12 to 24 hours. In most cases the ingredients are transmitted transdermal through the skin to the blood and then into the cells bypassing the stomach which usually degrades or destroys the ingredients. The first commercially available prescription patch was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in December 1979.

There are three general classes of patches:

Nutritional Patches are designed to deliver nutrients, vitamins, or minerals through the skin.

Nutraceutical Patches combine ingredients that have been recognized to have health benefits beyond basic nutrition.

Medical Patches are used to deliver medications, typically through a controlled-release mechanism. They can be categorized by the type of drug delivered and the delivery system. There are a wide variety of medical patches available for different conditions.

Non-medical patch technology is improving rapidly using the medical industry technology for delivery and nano or micro sizing of ingredients.

Through the years, studies show that patch delivery of ingredients can be more effective than other technologies.

The price of a patch will vary greatly depending on the type, quality, and ingredients. In some cases, one ingredient in one product for one month could cost more than a year’s supply of another product with many different ingredients.

Patch technology is not the only technology that has made rapid advancement. Micro powders and molecular encapsulation have made incredible progress. But the convenience of sticking on a patch and forgetting it has many advantages for many ingredients.
